My Locale Midwest
About Me I am in my late-40's and really got interested in backpacking about 10 years ago as a way to have some concentrated time with my boys, now all finishing up high school or in college. I try to get out a few times a year, including a bi-annual trip to Colorado for some of the big stuff. Otherwise I am stuck in the very boring midwest where everything exciting is a good day's drive away.

You might want to take a look at the SMD Lunar Duo as well. I recently purchased it during a sale and I am surprised it doesn't get more of a mention on this site. 2 doors, 2 vestibules, ligh...

Any others with advice?
David, great advice, thanks! I wish we had universities with outdoor leadership schools in Indiana so I wouldn't have to pay out of state tuition. Ouch!

Exped UL 7 L/W
I also went from the NeoAir to the Exped Synmat 7 UL. I am 6', 240 lbs and use the L/W (77x25). For the extra weight, about 3-4 oz I believe, the Exped is an absolute dream pad. Very thick, v...

Excellent quilt!
Just a quick endorsement for the Palisade. I have this quilt and, along with my WM Badger, it is my favorite piece of gear. Huge loft, very well made, and very warm. Great product and worth the ...

Concern of scorpions, etc?
Sumi, thanks for the comments. Very helpful. If I use just a tarp is there any concern of scorpions or any other creepy/crawlies in the canyon? I've not cowboy camped much and never in the SW.

Fly needed in GCNP in late May?
I am hiking the Grand Canyon in late May, going from R2R2R over a few days. One night is at the campground at the bottom. Quick question for those in the know, assuming the weather forecast is cl...

I did my first (and still only) solo in the Smokeys on a great 57 mile loop about 18 months ago. Two months later I had a heart attack. I suspect that as long as I am married I won't be doing...
