My Locale Southern California
About Me I live in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. I can get to a lot of nice hiking areas right from my street or travel for 15 minutes to higher elevations in the Angeles National Forrest. I started packing again with my sons in their Boy Scout troop. I was definitely not light that first trip 6 years ago and have been reducing my pack weight ever since. I mainly pack a few times a year in the Eastern and Western Sierras.

He actually did it!
We just got back home. I'll let Andrew post when he can. However, for those of us that know the JMT and its incessant climbs and descents this is really an amazing feat! Congrats Handy Andy!

JMT List
Well, your list is well thought out. As far as the off topic of tarps goes, I always use a tarp for 3 seasons and do so in the shoulder season. As stated, good pitch is everything. The othe...

JMT List
Looks like a good list you have thought out. My two areas are clothing: 2 long sleeve base layers. One in pack one while worn/carried. You could get away with just one long sleeve base layer ...

VVR/MTR
My preference now would be to not stop at VVR and just stop at MTR. I did stop at VVR on my JMT hike and liked it a lot. The food was great. Who would not like a good piece of fried chicken, meatlo...

Shoes
I recently have gone to Altras. I have a pair of Lone Peak 1.5 and 2.0. For me, it's the best, out of the box, hiking shoe I have found. I have wide feet and always tried to get some sort of Ne...

What a nice, concise report. When I heard this "old" man had done it I was thinking a 70 year old. Hey, I'm 53. Now, I'm an old man! I really like the mental aspect of these fa...

MSR MIOX
We used a MSR Miox on a trip with 9 people (Scouts). We got very spotty results and ended up playing with the unit more than we wanted. It seemed like the perfect solution but was not worth the wait. ...
