Traveling light
I'm going to Hawaii. I want to travel as light as possible. Can I make everything I need fit into a day pack? I may bring a 45 degree sleeping quilt so we can go camping. Any tips?

Re: Musical instruments for backpacking
I have a strumstick. I play it sort of like a fiddle, playing the melody with all 3 strings. The chords usually come out right just doing that. I like that these instruments are quiet and that t...

Re: Hammocks/Tents/Dogs
I have not used a hammock. I hike in the chaparral often. There aren't always trees available. Plus I would need all new gear such as underquilts and all that. It doesn't look lighter than ...

Re: Broken leg, 6 days alone and rescued
I don't look forward to the day when you can't hike solo without some kind of electronic tether. That guy did well. He stayed calm. He took care of his injuries. He survived. He didn&...

Mustard requires refrigeration? I've been storing mustard and sriracha sauce unrefrigerated in my office for months and eating a little every day. Always tastes good.
