My Locale Oregon and Washington
About Me I started hiking about 45 years ago. My first backpack was 40 years ago. I currently try to do one backpack trip of 5 nights every month (which can be tricky in the winter) 20 to 50 miles. Mostly I stay around Mount Hood, Columbia Gorge, Mount Adams, Goat Rocks, and the Olympic Peninsula. In recent years I have shifted to lightweight - my pack weight without food and water is about 15 lb (7 kg). I make a lot of my own gear - silnylon tarp-tent, bivy, synthetic bag, simple bag style pack. My sleeping pad is a Therm-a-Rest air mattress.

Re: Re: Re: Good pack material?
no, just 30D silnylon, which marginally worked 200D polyurethan nylon seems much stiffer so much better Since my 30D pack weighs the same as 200D, no reason to try 70D?

Re: Not Much Experience
I tried using plastic bags on my feet and the skin turned into prunes. The skin was much softer and liable to damage, I thought, so I took them off after one day. Maybe I should have put the ba...

Re: Good pack material?
200d Oxford nylon is plenty strong enough. Unless maybe you're a rock climber dragging it against rocks or poking it with Yucca or something, in which case maybe Dynema would be better. 2...

Re: How do you store your food?
In Oregon and Washington, I just hang food in bag. Sometimes my pack. If possible I'll do a legitimate bear hang - 10 feet from ground, 10 feet from tree sideways. But bears are fearfu...
