About Me Grew up camping and backpacking in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. Then went to the east coast for grad school...then job...then family. Twenty years later we were able to reach escape velocity from Washington DC and relocated the entire family to the PNW. I've fallen in love with the Cascades as much as the Rockies. And we spend 4 weeks every year in Montana near Glacier.

Re: Re: Bob Marshall South Fork Hiking / Fishing

Re: Bob Marshall South Fork Bears
Agree. The only places I do carry bear spray are in the Bob and Alaska. We spent a month in the summer every year just outside the Bob visiting family and do as many nights backpacking in the a...

Re: Re: Water Resistant Down
Patagonia made a big deal of its Encapsil treatment, which I understand to be a distinct (and better?) technology than all the other down treatments. But now I don't see any products or any ne...

Re: Re: Re: 4 g Esbit tablets
It would be interesting to hear from ESBIT why the larger tabs are individually packaged and the smaller ones are not. Is it simply that the larger ones are more susceptible to crumbling? Or is th...

Re: Re: Re: Fishy Vapor
Agree, my experience that used tabs are more difficult to relight. My guess is that the crystals that form on the surface are partially reacted and that the surface of the tab is partially oxidize...

I was sort of hiding my gear OCD from my wife, but not all that well. But when I started just carrying all our gear on the backpacking trips we took together, she quit complaining. She is not jus...

Re: Re: Esbit cleanup
My experience using Esbit for many years is that the residue is water soluble, and comes off easily with a little water and light scrubbing. I do it at camp after each cooking event. Takes 1 minute...

I think that should be the new BPL tag line instead of "Pack less, be more." BACKPACKING LIGHT All threads, given time, drift to umbrellas.
