My Locale Western Oregon
About Me I started lightweight backpacking in 2009. I had some backpacking "experience" in the Army National Guard (Basic and Infantry school) that was definitely far from lightweight. I had no equipment to begin with, so I was excited to be able to start from scratch on my backcountry gear list.

My most up to date 3 season gear list is online:

I've read a copy of Peace Pilgrim's pamphlet (they are still available today, a quick google search should find the site honoring her legacy) and appreciate this telling of her story, since...

I would consider buying it
I entered the backpacking world with no preconceived notions... and thankfully started my outdoors education here on BPL rather than with a trip to the local store. Although I like to be lightweig...

ESEE Izula
I have my eyes on the ESEE Izula for a fixed blade knife to carry while backpacking. It's very similar to the Becker Necker, with knife forums all over the internet full of threads comparing t...

Topo! Explorer
I really like Topo! explorer. Unlike the other topo products, this one doesn't require you to insert discs for geographic areas; you buy individual USGS maps ($1 each) and then can browse them ...

The article was okay for those looking to lighten their load, but definitely falls short of representing the views represented by the lightweight backpacking community. I think that many heavily l...

Tons of food for thought!
Wow! I'm so glad I posted about this; you have all given me a ton to think about. Daniel - "How is the fit on the Tom's? Are they more or less true to size? I have wide feet and ne...
