My Locale So-Cal
About Me 46 years old. Married with two kids- Daughter born in 2000, son born in 2003. Loved camping as a little kid. Then we moved to the foot of Mt. Whitney when I was 13. I spent my teenage years backpacking, hiking, snowshoeing, xc & downhill skiing. A lot less since then (living in LA).

Re: I've been charged with putting together a gear system for my family - looking for input
I'll let others with more knowledge reply to the specifics. Don't try to replace all the old gear with lighter gear one for one. Start from zero and limit the item list. Trekking p...

Cozy: Reflectix vs. foam
I think either should work fine. The main reasons I like Reflectix is that it is more flexible (good for a freezer bag cozy, not an issue for a pot cozy), and spills clean up more easily. Bubbl...

Re: Re: Glad Tent
"A zero waste camping experience." NO. Actually an all waste camping experience. Lack of trash bags isn't the problem. Too much trash is.

Re: The SUL Mindset
I've barely embraced LW, let alone UL or SUL- but I think a lot of it is about mindset. Many years ago I came to a conclusion and made a pronouncement: "I can hike as far on a dayhike...

Re: What's so great about the JMT?
I'm tempted to badmouth it so people go elsewhere... but most of the JMT isn't very crowded. It's an iconic trail- I remember being a little kid and marveling at the Happy Isles sign...

When to use a bivy?
True that a light tent isn't a weight penalty over bivy plus tarp. What I like about using a bivy is that "setup" is just throwing it on the ground it you don't need to rig the...

Re: Noobie Bivy Questions
I have two bivies. One is just a sack with no zip or net. It is very convenient, great at keeping my gear clean and keeping bugs off as ling as I wear a headnet. Problem is it's a bit smalle...
