About Me I am the author of "Hike Your Own Hike: 7 Life Lessons from Backpacking Across America." Half of my royalty from that goes to support the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail. So buy it even if you think it sucks! :)
Also, my new book, "The Hidden Europe," just came out. Although it's not all about backpacking, it does feature several stories about hiking in Eastern Europe. Those who enjoy travelogues will enjoy this.

Thank you for your comments
I enjoyed reading everyone's thoughtful comments on my article. Two things to add: 1. I often tell people that after a couple of hundred miles a thru-hike goes from being a physical chal...

Chris: That IS a heavy pack! That's Hawkeye, a fun thru-hiker that I met while walking southbound through Yellowstone. Last year he completed a "Triple-Double": he thru-hiked the Trip...

Snowshoes and Bears
Samuel C. Farrington: Yeah, it would have helped to have snowshoes, overall. I carried crampons in May, but that was a mistake. I should have carried snowshoes instead. I never used the crampons be...

Re: Myth #3 caveat
Tim, you make a fair point. I never said it would be easy! I just said it's a myth that you can't do go through Colorado in May. The fact is: you can do it. Sure, you'll see more sk...

Backpacks and Shoes
I forgot to mention a few things on this podcast. - I recommend that most backpackers use the Gossamer Gear Mariposa Plus backpack. It's sturdy, light, and has huge capacity. - If you...
