Some ideas to lighten your load.
Replace toothpaste with powdered (avail at whole foods) I'm not sure where you came up with just 20.5oz for your BC500; my BV500 weighs 39oz. Ditch the moleskin. It won't stay on. Use...

JMT night-time temps.
"I would not expect the night time temps to drop below 50 in mid-Aug." I also advise you prepare for possible temps in the upper 20s along the JMT. While I have hiked the JMT only in l...

H2O and bottle filters..
@Ian - thanks! @Roger - 2 liters!? At home in the SF Bay Area I drink 2-3 a day and on the trail in the high Sierra, hiking 9-18 mpd w/a 27lb pack, I average close to 8 liters. Interesting, eh?

I'm sorting out the logistics of having a friend join me for the first couple of days of my JMT hike (though starting in Tuolumne, not the Valley). I'd like to make it easy for her. So far,...

No soap, please... :)
If you follow LNT principals, you leave Dr. Bronner's (and all other soaps) at home. I never bring any soap ("bio-degradable" or not) into the backcountry and advocate for others to d...

temps, gear, etc.
I hiked the JMT last summer (late July-early Aug) and will do so again this summer (though leaving Tuolumne, 7/24). As far as temps go, FYI, there was frost/ice on our bags and on the ground in Lye...

Sleeping with a hot (nalgene) water bottle
Ross - This has been recommended to me before, and the idea of holding a hot water bottle to my core is heavenly! My hesitation, however, is that heating water before bed (or extra water earlie...

Quilt/Pad/Warmth - thanks!
Thank you all for your advice. Although I have never felt any coolness from below while sleeping on the Exped synmat UL7, I guess I (wrongly) thought all was well w/my sleeping pad choice. Trut...
