I've been impressed with the Sierra Designs dricanvas pants in the heat. They're a cotton blend and nice and breathable, especially after being worn and washed a few times.

The southern DD canyons are much less similar to Escalante than RR forks. Fiddler Cove, Hatch, Happy area might be a good option and are pretty unique. Maybe get up on the Block. Great area.

John- I just undid the bottom stitch of the hipbelt and sewed on pieces of webbing with grommets like the originals. You have to push the foam out of the way but it's not too difficult.
