My Locale Arkansas Ozarks
About Me Eagle Scout. I spent 9 summers on Camp Orr Adventure Base staff, BSA, Buffalo National River. I love my home in the Ozarks, but constantly wish for the grandeur that I see in the West, or in Europe. I'm the father of one boy, born for the trail. I blog a little about my experiences out there. I'm working on a mini-seminar to do with the local Boy Scout troops. Something like "Introduction to Lightweight Backpacking". I was also approached recently for help with bridge building on the Ozark Highlands Trail. We'll have to see about that though.

I got my Cen-Tech 500g scale at Harbor Freight as well. It was cheap enough, and it suits my needs perfectly.

Blaze (as in Blaze Orange) or Blazeline? I own some and I call it my "waxline" due to the waxy feel of the line. So enter that name too. Good luck finding a great name guys.

Best backpacking hat.
Thanks for the good ideas in this thread. I have always used different hats for different trips. I have made a gradual transition. The last cotton item to leave my gear list was a cotton ball cap. ...

Do trekking poles increase speed?
I agree with Dan. It seems to me that my stride is longer when I use them, I fatigue less. This gives me more time to cover my distances. Since dropping weight and picking up poles, I rarely even b...

My rat terriers kill snakes all the time. In fact, the first one I owned was sired by "the best snake dog I ever seen", or so said the breeder. If my female walks in front of me, I have n...

Osprey Exos 46
Short and simple. I dig the smaller straps and buckles. I was initially concerned about the buckles and (thin) waist belt, but that has proven to be unfounded. I have about 100 miles on the pack and n...
