My Locale Colorado Rockies
About Me Started backpacking in 1967 and (apart from my 3 years living in Indiana) have never stopped. I've been section-hiking the Colorado Trail the last 4 years, and gotten to Marshall Pass so far. I'm not fanatic about weight, possibly because I like to load up my Newfoundland dog and use him as a pack animal. The important thing is to go, and to have a good time.

Re: RMNP
Thanks, Baloo is a great hiking companion, and another reason why I won't be backpacking in RMNP any time soon, as dogs are yet another taboo there. There is definitely a bureaucratic ratchet a...

Re: 27 Hours in Glacier Gorge
Another nice report Dondo. I camped there 7 or 8 years ago and the "privy" was just an open-air seat, so I don't think they tore down any structures. Your report highlights a mana...

24: Grape Creek WSA
Inspired by Dondo's report on the Beaver Creek WSA, and exasperated by the winter that will not end here in Colorado, I began searching for likely low-elevation hikes along the Front Range. L...

Sahara vs Ex Officio
I've hiked in the Sahara shirt for several years and found it rather hot, although fairly wind-resistant when above treeline. I just got an Ex Officio Fly Lite at STP and have been on a few da...

Re: bear bagging on the colorado trail
I do, but your informants are correct. In 25 years of backpacking in CO I have seen exactly one bear - in Dowdy Draw, 2 miles outside the Boulder city limits. That doesn't mean they haven'...

Re: Snow
The rules are pretty simple - just buy a license, there is no "season" in CO. There are local restrictions on heavily fished waters, but that's never a problem when backpacking. And...

Re: Re: Bushbuddy/Ti-Tri at altitude?
What is it that you like better about the Ti-Tri alcohol stove as compared to the Trangia? I like the Trangia because it can be dampened for sauteeing/simmering rather than just going full blast. ...

Re: wood fires at altitude
Yup, I've done that too. I used to carry a grill as backup for when my various Sveas/MSRs would die or run out of fuel. And back in the 60's I didn't know there was a choice other tha...

Bushbuddy/Ti-Tri at altitude?
I used a Stratus wood stove 2005-2006 and was fairly disappointed. Although the stove did great in my backyard (5400 ft), its performance really fell off at altitude. At 10,000 ft it was a chore t...

Re: Re: PC
It sounds like you are mostly looking for a data logger rather than a navigation device. Qstarz has several very lightweight loggers - I have the BT1200 which has a solar panel on it to extend bat...

MLD Silnylon Pro Poncho The new Pro
Like George I started with a GoLite tarp, but found it a bit too small for adequate coverage. I've had the MLD tarp for a year now and and am fully satisfied with its performance both as a tar...
