My advice as a former grunt....
Do a "show and tell" with all your gear then load it all in your pack and let him walk around with it on his back...he'll be a UL believer in no time.

Shelter or not
best thing about shelters is not having to pack a wet tent. Worse thing is they'll dictate your mileage. Take your won't regret it.
