My Locale rural New England
About Me 'Way back in the 50's, before backpacking caught on, my father took his Boy Scout troop up Mt. Marcy and created a special badge for the trip. No, I couldn't go, he said. No girls allowed. Maybe that's why I was off to the Adirondacks with totally primitive equipment at the first opportunity... loved it, been out there ever since. Used to be fastpacker/peakbagger but now just your average backpack trekker who stops to smell the orchids (hee). Will never be lunatic fringe UL but getting away from heavy stuff; been heading that way from start.

I use rain chaps.
There have been times when backpacking in warm weather with no danger of sudden temperature change, that I have been willing to simply let my pants legs get wet, but mostly I've pulled on the w...

Re: Possible cheap-outs/outer layer
And here's another, although I haven't actually had this one in my hands: REI has the Sierra Designs Axis jacket ($30, down from $80; 7 oz) in its Outlet Store. It has a hood.

Checked this topic to be sure someone recommended Stephensons. Sho' nuff, nice pics, Scott. Regarding the preference for double wall, I keep going over that in my mind, and I realize I'...

Yes, I was lucky enough to score a fall '05 Micro Puff jacket in dark grey last week, 50% off, at a local outfitter. Am very impressed with its lightness though obviously haven't had the op...

I think the reason the Houdini is a real winner is that it fills a niche need at a negligible weight. I'll grab one when I find it at a good price, because I've always been a rain poncho we...

Houdini *not* as waterproof layer
Just this week I had occasion to call Patagonia with a similar question, as I'm looking for a suitable outer shell for my newly-acquired Micro Puff jacket. The well-informed CSR I spoke with wa...

Outdoor Research Tempest Hat for Women
It weighs 2.7 ounces. It would be hard to get much lighter and still be a hat. It is made of their Ventia fabric, a 3-layer 50 denier ripstop, lined with what they call a midweight polyester mesh. It ...
