Re: Down Parka for the wife
Frostline is hard to beat for the price. ALternatively the rab neutrino has 7oz and can be had under $200 right now. It's not box wall construction but well regarded for the warmth and fit.

Re: Idea for snowshoe/crampon/short ski combo? Any potential?
I think you just described an Altai Hok for all intents and purposes, only not long enough to ski with and probably too wide at that. Find or make a crampon for the altai and you'll be set. ...

Re: Re: Polartec Micro Fleece $20 @ Costco
Just to update, my medium is 8.65oz with tags and fits a little boxy in the body and the wrists are not tapered, but for $20 I like it quite a bit! I'm a 38R, 5'11" and 165lbs for refe...

Re: Re: most miserable cold night!
I'd blame the pad. Switching my pad system made the biggest difference in my nighttime warmth. You may not "feel" it but your body will expend a lot of energy trying to warm up the ea...

Re: Zion National Park Mid January Gear Help
Due to the time contraints, the specialty (and cost) of winter gear, I would recommend renting. The trip will be worth it. If you do go for buying, spend money on your bag. A good bag is worth i...

Re: Re: Re: Re: Use the rope
True, but when canyoneering you're usually below the anchors and weighting them directly, so risk of shock loading the sling is fairly low. A sling of any type is still better than clipping ...

Re: Re: The secrets botanists keep
The presence of Jaguars in SE Arizona is generally regarded as a secret. Sure the occasional roaming male gets leaked to the public, but allegedly we have a small but healthy breeding population in...

Re: Black Diamond Cold Forge Parka / PrimaLoft & down
Haven't tried it but I'm of the same mindset. Synthetic sucks less when it is wet out and it's cheaper. Those two facts offset the weight and durability issues Down is lighter, wa...
