Re: Velcro or snaps would work
If using velcro, I'd sew the loop part on the mesh so it won't snag all the time when you pack it up separately.

No need to preshrink. It needs much hotter temp than sunlight to shrink.

This local story reminded me of your testing. I wonder if it's really smell they use for phones or (ultrasonic) sound? To smell it while inside a ziploc under water is quite a feat.
