electrical tape was ok
I've actually done the same with electrical tape. I forgot it was on there and washed it. It held up fine so ive kept it. Edit - note I did not run it through the dryer so YMMV!

I think solid fuel does make a lot of sense for scouts. Don't forget Coughlans tablets are quite a bit cheaper but otherwise functionally equivalent to Esbit tabs.

I think if you bring repeat food it should be something you like under normal circumstances. I have brought donuts for breakfast 5 days in a row and it worked out great. They lasted really well too...
