I think solid fuel does make a lot of sense for scouts. Don't forget Coughlans tablets are quite a bit cheaper but otherwise functionally equivalent to Esbit tabs.

I think if you bring repeat food it should be something you like under normal circumstances. I have brought donuts for breakfast 5 days in a row and it worked out great. They lasted really well too...

Or you use Coughlans fuel tablets which are half the size and so you don't need to split them. They're cheaper as well.
