My Locale Boulder, CO
About Me I started backpacking as a teenager in southern appalachia. My summers in college were spent in mountain heaven, glacier national park. Since then, I've lived and played in the high sierras, the cascades, and now the colorado front range. Walking in the mountains with a light pack never seems to lose its charm. I recently picked up a bad habit called climbing.

I'd agree with what dan said, and I'd steer you toward a mirage, if funds allow. Montbell does have some of the best puffies around from the lightest weight to the heavier winter pieces.

The 2014 essence is nice. I'd subjectively say that its as or more breathable than the event anorak I had before it, but 4 oz lighter. The fabric is fairly soft & stretchy for a shell, too.

I think I driclime fits your criteria well. If you're marching (or skiinning) up hill for a while, it might get too hot, but for intermittent windy (alpine) conditions at 30, the driclime with ...

I've thought this piece would be a good additional cold weather action layer as well. The driclime stuff is great, and can be worn through a pretty broad temp range in my experience. The wickin...

RX100 vs. LX100
I think that LX100 will probably top the RX100 in terms of image quality, and if you like taking portraits or shots with narrow depth of field, than the lx would be the obvious choice. I have the R...

Vapour-Rise Pants
I got the VR pants, something I probably wouldn't think to get if they weren't for $50, but they seem like they'll make a great winter action pant for skiing and hiking. They weigh less...

I know you're looking for a vest, Mike, but this is a very light synthetic jacket, I think < 6oz, made for exactly what you're describing. http://www.trekkinn.com/outdoor-mountain/be...

Hi Alex, I didn't tinker with the frame sheet a whole lot, but it seemed quite stiff by virtue of a removable aluminum frame that goes behind a soft/supportive ventilated mesh and foam backpane...

rain shell
@woubeir yes, I wear my rain jacket over just a base layer and occasionally over a light puffy jacket. I usually wear an M or L, but went with an L for better coverage and enough room for a puffy l...

I'm very impressed with this pack. I tried out a few packs for a planned AT thru hike (didn't pan out yet), and this was far and a away my favorite. With the stay and sitpad, the pack conforms...
