My Locale Southern California
About Me I live in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. I can get to a lot of nice hiking areas right from my street or travel for 15 minutes to higher elevations in the Angeles National Forrest. I started packing again with my sons in their Boy Scout troop. I was definitely not light that first trip 6 years ago and have been reducing my pack weight ever since. I mainly pack a few times a year in the Eastern and Western Sierras.

Did I get sick?
No, I did not get sick. I was just wondering if it would have any effect on any such PARASITE like giardia when it goes down the gullet.

A bit of Giardia with a Chlorine Dioxide chaser
Recently I took a short hike over Shepherds Pass in the Eastern Sierra. I had never been over the pass and wanted to see if for myself. Anyway, as usual, I threw a bunch of my stuff together and...

Freezer Bag
I used to not like freezer bag cooking due to the leftover food in the bag. Kind of nasty if you are on a longer hike where you can't dump trash. So, we would use a 2 cup Glad or Tupperware ro...

Joseph, Thanks for the link. I have seen a lot of reports over the years and looks like a place to visit. I'm in Southern California so it's hard to push on up to Tahoe when there are so...

First Trip
Great report and photos. I am sure most of us don't use filters anymore. Kind of clunky. Like the suggestions above, Steripen, iodine, and chlorine dioxide are the treatments of choice. I...

Shelters
The SMD Haven is a real nice sized shelter. I have a Gatewood Cape and always liked how easy it was to set up. The Haven is bigger and has a lot of room. I do not own a Haven but have always liked ...

Nice Job
Way to go on finishing the JMT. It is such a beautiful and worthwhile trail. I always love seeing people in their 60's and 70's and on when I am out on the trail. Lets me know that if I sta...

JMT Unsupported FKT- Andrew Bentz
This is kind of a cross post, nonetheless, I feel it belongs here in the Post Trip Reports. Andrew beat Brett Maune's Unsupported time on the John Muir Trail. He posted a trip report on his blo...

He actually did it!
We just got back home. I'll let Andrew post when he can. However, for those of us that know the JMT and its incessant climbs and descents this is really an amazing feat! Congrats Handy Andy!

MSR MIOX
We used a MSR Miox on a trip with 9 people (Scouts). We got very spotty results and ended up playing with the unit more than we wanted. It seemed like the perfect solution but was not worth the wait. ...
