On a Winter overnight I would not bother with the faff of a shoe "system." Get yourself a pair of light insulated boots like the Vasque snow junkies and some sock changes and call it good...

I think you need a longer ax in the 60-70cm size which is more appropriate for your height AND the deep powder snow in Japan. It will give you more leverage to self arrest too.
