My Locale North East Ohio
About Me I'm an ARMY Veteran of 13.5 years. I spent the years mostly in combat oriented jobs, mainly Infantry, which gave me a chance to see the world. That was my introduction to backpacking of a sort. Through my Military career, I backpacked more than 10,000 miles. Now I go simply because I love it. I also mountain bike, rock climb, kayak, and do nature photography. I wouldn't call my self an ultra-lighter per say, but my base weight is just below 12 lbs.

Re: "Too Many Good Cause Requests"
I only donate to small local organizations. I donate my time more than I do money. This is partly for financial reasons, and partly for ideological ones. When you look at a breakdown of the use...

Re: "Potty trowel"
I started off using the cheap orange plastic trowels. I live in northeast Ohio and do most of my day-hiking here and in western PA. Most of my weekend trips are in western PA as well. A lot of ...

Re: Re: Re: Hawaiian Pigs
The boars, in my experience, are very brazen on Oahu. They'd even run across the live fire ranges while we were firing. They didn't appear to be afraid of anything. As for the mongoose, ...

Re: "We talk a lot about bears. What about boars?"
I figured Ian B. would chime in on this one. I have similar stories from Oahu and the Big Island in Hawaii. One night at about 3 A.M. on Oahu, a mid-sized boar went rummaging through camp and to...

Re: Re: yet another dumb hiker post
I'll get info on the routes before I head out, and plan accordingly. I always do. Card? We don't need no stinking cards! lol

Re: "yet another dumb hiker post"
I don't what to say about this except, "If you dislocate your hip that easily, maybe backpacking alone in the middle of nowhere isn't the best idea." Strangely enough, I'm ...

Re: J-tree graphitti and other problems
I've seen this problem in Cuyahoga Valley NP here in Ohio. Trash everywhere, damage to the sculpted sandstone cliffs from illegal climbing, and illegal carving of symbols / graffiti on the c...

I received my 3" Ultralight Titanium Trout Knife yesterday. It came with 2 different sheaths, one larger and one smaller. Total weight with smaller sheath: 0.208 ounces (5.89 grams). ...

Re: Order Completion
I got my 2nd pot support yesterday. Same great quality as 1st one I ordered. My flash died, but you can see the slight bend I made in it to fit my stove nested into inside of cut down mug. Th...

There's so much ranting I could do here that I'd sound like a lunatic. Once when I was in dire straights financially, I worked briefly in a Walmart Photo Center. Never again. Slightly ch...

As noted in posts above, MG charges shipping on all sale items no matter how much the order total comes to. Normally not a problem, as they state it openly on their website. I've ordered pro...
