Maybe the "average" joe actually has a use for some of those straps too... I love osprey packs when I am doing more technical climbing/mountaineering trips that require easy/fast acces...

weight savings
On weight savings, there are some redundant items - 2 pairs of long underwear (unless one is for winter, the other 3 season, gym shorts, etc... I bet you could shave quite a few ozs by simply peru...

oh yeah
oh, and when it comes to warmth, I've found it better to err on the side of too warm for winter alpine stuff. Winter is not the time to get caught with your pants down insulation wise.
