My Locale Northern California
About Me I've been backpacking for about 10 years, and just started going ultralight in 2008. Man, what a difference!

I'm based in the SF Bay Area, and regularly do 1-2 day trips around the area. I like to cover 35-50 miles per day, usually at a 3 - 3.5 mi/hr pace.

My big trips on the horizon include a 4-day Tahoe Trim Trail loop (7/1 - 7/4) and a 5.5 day John Muir Trail (N--S, 8/31 - 9/5).

Please get in touch if you want to go fast, light and far in Northern California!

Tahoe Rim Trail - 7/1 - 7/4
Over the long holiday weekend, I completed a solo thru-hike of the Tahoe Rim Trail, starting in Tahoe City and going counter-clockwise. I only got about 10 decent photos before my camera battery d...

Re: Tahoe Rim Trail Unsupported Record
5.25 lbs = 84 oz, so you're getting a little bit over 100 cal/oz. Have you considered adding some foods with a higher fat content to boost calories/oz? Personally I like ProBars, which have 3...

Re: Re: Re: Tahoe Rim Trail Unsupported Record
Aaron, What's your planned water intake rate? I recently mapped out the water sources around the entire TRT, and I think the longest stretch without water is 15-20 miles, or 5-6 hours. J...

I'm planning to do the JMT later this summer, going N-->S, and starting in Yosemite on 8/30, and completing the hike in 5 days, averaging around 45 mi/day. My pace is 3 - 3.5 mi/hr. I...

Tahoe Rim Trail (7/1 -7/4)
I'm planning a counter-clockwise circuit of the TRT, beginning in Tahoe City on 7/1, and ending some time on 7/4, just in time for the 4th of July festivities on the North Shore! In order to...

Big Sur closures(?)
Hi everyone, Anyone know if there are still significant trail closures in Ventana due to the fires in 2008? I had heard that many trails are still closed, but haven't confirmed.

Good luck Aaron! I hope to see you early on 7/1 as I head clockwise from Tahoe City. I promise not to offer you any 'support', except for moral encouragement of course :)

UL 'all in one' alternative to the Jetboil?
Wow, I trust my jetboil, and have definitely eaten in the car, but cooking in the car definitely takes it to the next level! ;)

UL 'all in one' alternative to the Jetboil?
So I'm steadily trimming the last few ounces from my gear list, and one of the 'luxury items' that I'm having a hard time parting with is my Jetboil, I like the all-in-one nature of...

Canyonlands NP - Peekaboo Canyon & Salt Creek to Angel Arch
As part of a recent 1-week trip through AZ and UT, I spent a day hiking in the Needles District of Canyonlands NP. For those folks who haven't heard of Canyonlands, I really think it's o...
