I always store my tent fly's and inners in mesh bags similar to ones you get with sleeping bags to eliminate that risk. Even just having them in plastic shopping bags is better than having them...

Keep the Aether and buy an affordable lightweight pack. Then at least you'll have both if the occasion requires, you can never have too much gear.

Hole in mat
Try a spray bottle with soapy water and cover the whole bottem of the mat. It should start bubbling when you put some pressure on the mat. This method worked great for an REI used sale thermarest.
