How about a FlexAir inflatable pillow at half an ounce? I find them much more comfortable that wadded up clothes.

Kind of fun to have an Fred Eric and an Eric Fred(ricksen) on the same thread. :) My kettle was 41% efficient in my kitchen. It's possible that enough tweaking could get it to 50%. Who knows...

Merino for me too
I don't like the stink of synthetic, and it also feels uncomfortable to me. Kind of hot and cold at the same time. All those sheep can't be wrong.

Speaking generally, I think it's better to layer. E.g. choose a Montbell UL Inner, but wear it with a wool sweater, wind shirt, etc.

Montbell UL Down Inner Jacket
Fit is a bit loose around the body for a large, I think; other than that the amount of warmth it provides for so little weight is lovely. (And there I am wearing it in my avatar picture.)
