My Locale Southeast USA
About Me Though I live in the burgeoning sprawl of Atlanta for work, I go to the mountains at every opportunity, even after work during the long daylight hours of summer. I tend to hike the less-crowded places, prefer quality over quantity. I do a good bit of off-trail exploring, ofter finding amazing waterfalls and ancient rock shelters. Most incredible hiking I've done was in Peru, where some trailheads start at 14000.

Re: Re: NEW 2007 Marmot Ion Windshirt
Thanks for the insight, Ben. The tag on the 2006 version with the comment on down is why I think it was the calendared version of pertex, and why it feels slicker and is less breathable. The proce...

Re: NEW 2007 Marmot Ion Windshirt
Ben Sounds like this version of the Ion is worth the afforable price. So the Marmot label for the fabric is indeed re-branded Quantum of some type? My old Marmot Chinook is more breathable tha...

Re: John R.; re; 9020
I agree with you guys - for the most part the under 40 crowd doesn't know how to use a compass. I grew up hiking and sailing. I truly learned to use a compass by sailing, particularly when ...

PJ, I appreciate you sharing detailed info about the Fenix Cree line of lights. The only think you left out were links to purchase them. Though I'm a dedicated headlamp user for hiking, the...

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Ultralight fire starter
Yup, the drier lint is a great way to recycle. Lint compresses well, too. A small zip lock of lint can start a dozen fires or more, and weighs only a few grams. Don't breathe the smoke ...

Re: Re: Re: Marmot Ion vs. Patagonia Houdini
Well heck Mark, I just paid $53 for a Pertex Quantum Ion from Campor. They apparently have a few in every size. I have a Marmot Chinook that is a few years old (pre-Ion I guess). I sweat so much th...

Re: Re: Montbell inflatable pillows are now in the US
Pillows are such an individual thing. A good pillow is one item where I'm willing to carry extra weight. Great ideas with the Flexlite double, David. Ryan's combo of clothing and pillow sounds work...

Re: Montbell inflatable pillows are now in the US
Dondo, did you try the Luxury Lite pillow? I have one, a bit disappointed considering that it is also $29. Nice construction, but even with only a few puffs of air, my head rolls around on it like ...

Re: Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles Review Summary and Gear Guide Overview
My post is a bit on the tardy side, but I'm just now catching up. I did want to share my experience with the Alpkit CF poles, compared to my other set, Leki Makalu Ti poles (no anti-shock). I b...

Marmot Ion
The comments above explain my perplexion with the Ion - it's highly water resistant, but breathes noticably less than my old Marmot Chinook. I just happen to have a pair of Montane Featherlite rai...
