I find that before a challenging trip, I tend to get a bit nervous because I'm thinking about ALL the obstacles that lay ahead and the sum total is intimidating. However, once the trip starts m...

CP2 FL
No help here, but wow I can't believe they're out of stock again already. Understandably so - they're awesome poles. With no straps, mine are 9.86oz/set.

Malto: There were no bugs last year. IIRC, Dave said last year that bugs wouldn't be a concern this time of year. My close to final gearlist is up in profile now. I'm feeling really good...

"Anyone have experience with these?" I bought some a year or so but haven't had them on the water yet. They are small - quite a bit smaller than you're likely envisioning and als...

Tim: PFD's are a personal call, so learn what you can and make a decision that suits your situation/skills and risk tolerance. I personally don't use a PFD on lakes, but that's not to ...

PFD
The 5 lbs float PFD is for class I-II water. The 10lbs version is for the bulk of backcountry use (up to class III). I anticipate using it a lot.

MYOG PFD SUL
Here's the super light setup with half the float (5 lbs total). Not for big water, but it's a mere 5.8oz and super compact (for a foam PFD).

Cuben
To me, cuben seems to pack a bit bigger. It might be possible to pack it smaller, but I hate to torque it too much as I roll it. High tension folding (ie. the top of a roll top dry sack) can cause ...

Spark-Lite Fire Starter (Survival Gear - BPL Gear Shop)
I have this kit and the FireLite Mini kit. This sparker is a bit lighter than the FireLite Mini but I don't trust this sparker 100% like I do the FireLite. This sparker doesn't work well wh...

BPL FireLite Firestarter
I love this FireLite Mini. It's the only thing that I 100% trust to start a fire. With a mini Bic you can run out of gas, be at too high of an altitude, get it wet or get it oily. Matches can ...
