I would use it unprotected in most East coast sites/ duff,dirt,grass.The rocky sites might puncture it as it would puncture any ground cloth.I find that with an 1/8'' pad under,then poncho,...

Loosten the load lifters and tighten the shoulder straps.That thing might just fit OK.Lifters are way too tight now.

Tyler: If you are 6'3" tall you'll need the Large torso exos.I use the large and am only 6'.You might try one on at REI or another local shop to be sure the belt fits.
