My Locale Southeast Alaska
About Me We are primarily kayakers who travel as light as possible on long trips here in Southeast Alaska. There are a lot of similarities between our paddling style and the ultra light approach noted here. My wife bought me the account for a holiday, and as incentive for me to return to multi-day backpacking.

Re: Re: USPS Rocks - for most....
"The "outrageous prices" are most likely realistic. " Free shipping anywhere in the 48 contiguous states seems to be the norm of late. Most of that shipping comes through eit...

USPS Rocks
I live in Alaska's capital, Juneau. UPS and Federal Express charge excruciatingly outrage prices for shipping to Juneau in particular and Alaska in general. USPS Priority Mail is a fraction of...

OR zips
I have a hard shell and a soft shell OR rain coat with the full zips. Have used them rather effectively with a backpack. In heavy rain just zip to the top and bottom edges of the belt. Works great.

Re: Cough drops
I don't think they would be more or less attracted to menthol cough drops than anything else. I'm mostly familiar with brown bears and they seem to either ignore or pounce on food (be it o...

Re: Leave no trace
Fortunately, there are no rules where we backpack and kayak, which is why I"ve never paddled in Glacier Bay though it is just a couple of day's paddle from here.

Re: Leave no trace
The Forest Service has no credibility in asking for, much less having regulations that demand anything resembling leave no trace. Their idea of leave no trace can be spotted from any aircraft flyi...

tarp weather
We spend a lot of nights in the rain and under the tarp. Cold rain, often accompanied with a stiff breeze. The flying wedge is a bomb proof pitch. Shown here at the entrance to Chatham Strait off o...

What do you mean, which tarp? I'm sure you mean which tarps should I get. I mean, this whole ultralight thing only pertains to what is on your back, not what is in your gear closet. For so...
