My Locale Central California Coast
About Me Started backpacking with the Boy Scouts in the 1960s, which should have cured me, but friends intervened. Failed PCT thru-hikes in 1976, 1980, and other adventures (whitewater rafting 1987-present) put backpacking on hold for a while.

In 1998 I read Jardine's PCT book and saw the light. I'm not super- ultra- anything, my base weight is about 13 pounds. But I'm back on the trails again.

Re: 90 InReach device limit
Bummer. I had some interesting ideas for other services. But that limit is completely unworkable. I hope they fix it soon. -- Rex

More HMG Windrider 2400 trimming
Just removed the internal hydration pocket, the triangular flaps, and two shoulder strap clips that (used to) hold my wrist loops; I'm sewing the wrist loops to the pack instead. Saved anoth...

Re: Why walking helps us think.
I thought I was strange because ideas come pouring out when I walk. That's why I carry a voice recorder to capture ideas. One critical point left out of the original article: Walking alone l...

+1 SAK Classic
+1 on the SAK Classic. I've carried many kinds of knives over the years, but I've stuck with the Classic for backpacking. Just big enough to do the essentials – mostly opening ornery f...

Great trip!
Manfred, Great trip, and you have two great grown sons. Seems the InRreach Explorer was quite useful on this trip for tent replacement and the mid-trip flight. Any other comments on it? ...

REI web site hides bad products
Note: I don't know if REI deliberately hides bad products, but their web site policies have that effect. I need a new day pack. I found the REI Flash 22 pack on sale for $34.59, and at first...

Re: bladder bags, and other collapsible bottle advantages
Like David, I used 2 gallon bladder bags way back when, and thought they were great for a while. Unlike David, I stopped using them after putting a hole in the thin plastic bag too many times. E...
