How long do you have? If you want to do most of the work, it might be a bit much for #1. If you have time, you could make a couple easier projects first.

Front-loading is OK on gentle, probably. But why not just hand-wash? That's what I would personally do.

I don't like wet hands where I hike, so I like to bring along a pair of MLD event mitts. They have a long cuff w/drawstring, really seals out water.
