My Locale Isle of Man
About Me Pre-Goretex backpacking mainly took in Snowdonia. Visits to the English Lake District started while attending Lancaster University, as did my first backpacking trips to Scotland. A Munro obsession grew, then ended on completion in 1986. No, I never told the record-keepers. Completion was followed immediately by trips to New Zealand, totalling 11 months, and to the Pyrenees. I have also backpacked in the Alps, Iceland, the Philippines, Zion NP and Ireland.

Gossamer Gear SpinnTwinn Tarp REVIEW
Loads of room for one under a SpinnSolo. But I agree with Bernard about the beaks. Without them, wind is an issue. On the other hand, if you are adding beaks, why not get a SpinnShelter?

Don't! It's sensational down there. Stay at least a week. I put my name down on the reserve list for permission to camp in the bottom on a Thursday evening and received my permit on Sa...

Use of groundsheet in torrential rain!
I've had two two week hikes and a week of cycle-touring in the Pyrenees. Storms seen: two -ish. The first featured lots of rain and not much wind. The second was so windy that I had to walk ...

Fastpacking Definition?
Ryan, I'm not so sure about the simplicity side of things. The first fast-packing items I saw for sale were like ultralight gear but with more features. And a little more weight. The word wa...

A Lightweight Guide to Backpacking in Sustained, Cold Rain
What a superb article! The follow up discussion is also interesting. I agree with the advice to wear as little as you can get away with under a waterproof but would caution that this is a littl...

Re: Re: Komperdell hiking poles
Ronald, How were you using the pole when it broke? Were you holding the two together as if they were a staff?

Re: Re: Pringles
Hi, Don. When I'm burning more than 5000 calories a day, I too eat anything I can get my hands on. It was me who tested the Pringles (plural) in the opened pack and I wasn't even particularly h...

Pringles
Pringles are an interesting choice. A friend once left half a pack in the cockpit of a small, sailing boat. A month later - and the boat had been on a mooring in Portsmouth harbour for most of th...

best thru hiking book?
John Hillaby's Journey through Britain inspired hundreds to walk the length of the country. But for me, the book which got me to put boots on my feet (and to keep my porridge dry) was Hamish's M...

Integral Designs eVENT Rain Jacket
My rating is for eVent as I've not tried the jacket. I'm just shocked to see Ryan opting for XL and can't help wondering what size I would need. My Montane Air medium is fairly tight. This is at od...
