FoodZip bags are a cheaper alternative to Odor Proof OP Saks when complete odor resistance is not necessarily required.
FoodZips are highly odor resistant. Most things stored in a FoodZip bag cannot be smelled by humans.
Another big difference between a FoodZip bag, and say, an OP Sak Meal Bag, is that the FoodZip does not have a bellowed bottom (so it doesn't stand up on its own well), it is smaller, and it is more durable - FoodZips are not more durable than Aloksaks, but they are more durable than OP Saks.
Ryan uses both FoodZips and OP Sak Meal Bags in packaging his food - with the OP Saks getting the nod for boil-in-bag meals (especially dinners) and FoodZips organizing the meals normally eaten dry from the bag (e.g., GORP mixes) or those that just need to be dumped into his cup in the morning (dry cereals).
What's the difference between a FoodZip and a typical "zip-lock" style sandwich bag? FoodZips are more durable - they have strong, welded seams that are a full 1/8" thick and a zip closure that can be repeatedly opened and closed without it failing throughout a long hike with no sacrifice in leakage. In terms of plastic strength, FoodZips are as thick and durable as "freezer" style bags, but have better elastomeric properties, especially at cold temperatures, and are more resistant to puncturing.
What's the difference between a FoodZip and, say, the 6" x 6" Aloksak bags? Aloksaks are more durable yet and have a more water resistant leakproof closure that can be subjected to high pressures. FoodZips are lighter, less expensive, but less durable than Aloksaks. We think Aloksaks (view the entire line of Aloksaks and OP Saks) are still the ideal solution for the storage of gear because of their terrific durability, puncture resistance, and water resistance, but FoodZips are a suitable alternative if you are on a budget.
Are FoodZips made with food-grade plastics? YES! Otherwise we wouldn't be calling them FoodZips! The plastic used in FoodZip bags is FDA approved for food storage, and they can be frozen, will take boiling water, and won't leak liquified foods.
