About Our Catalog
Our philosophy for product sourcing is very simple: to feature backpacking gear that has the highest performance-to-weight ratio available.
Many of our products are exclusive to BackpackingLight.com. We work closely with cottage industry manufacturers to develop custom ultralight backpacking gear that you won't find anywhere else.
The backpacking gear in this catalog is intended for a very small niche audience: some call it the lunatic fringe of ultralight hikers, backpackers, adventure racers, and alpinists. These folks don't cut the handle off their toothbrush. They simply leave it home. You know who you are. Surprisingly, much of this gear appeals to most hikers and backpackers as well - not just the lunatic fringe anymore!
We use a systems approach to merchandising our ultralight backpacking gear. Consequently, our catalog is organized in sections that comprise products that fit together as part of an integrated system. In addition to the integration of individual products within a system, please take the time to consider the cross-integration of products between systems and how they relate to each other. This cross-integration is most apparent in the shelter-sleep-clothing system categories.
