The Brawny Gear Brawny Tarp is a lightweight, floor-less shelter offering great weather protection. The silnylon shelter sets up using a minimum of six stakes and either two trekking poles or one trekking pole and an overhead tie out point such as a sturdy tree branch. Tie-outs provide ample floor space and even a taller individual can spread out when sleeping from corner to corner. Concerned about rain spray? Worry not. The design has two flaps of silnylon at the front entrance which can be rolled up, allowed to drape downward or staked out creating a door to shield from wind and rain.
A unique design feature is a PVC cap located in the peak of the shelter designed to accommodate the tip of a trekking pole. The corners and sides of the shelter are staked out and the trekking pole holds up the center of the shelter. Alternately a tie-out point located at the peak of the shelter can be affixed to a sturdy overhead branch alleviating the need for the central trekking pole. This will ease access into the shelter as well as free up floor space.
The shape of the tarp is trapezoidal which provides a good ratio of floor space to weight. Tipping the trekking pole slightly to the side will create a more live-able space as well. The door flaps which can be rolled open or closed can be used to create a vestibule.
The Brawny Tarp's main body and tie-out points are all constructed of 1.1 oz./sq. yd. silnylon. A small diameter of PVC is used as a receiver for a trekking pole used as a central pole. Mid-weight 3mm cordage is located for use as guy lines from the peak to a front ground stake as well as from the back wall to a back ground stake. All other tie out points can be staked directly into the ground or more guy line cord could be added to allow for pitching higher off the ground.
The Brawny Gear Brawny Tarp is constructed of a lightweight nylon and should be treated as such. The seams and fabric are intended to withstand the normal use by hikers and backpackers and will be long lasting with proper attention to care. The seams of the tarp do not come factory sealed or taped and may leak during precipitation. A mixture of seam sealant and mineral spirits should be prepared to seal the tarps seams before use.
