Abstract

A bear deterrent is defined herein as a device or method used to prevent or halt the progress of a charging grizzly bear. Your options are limited to the following list of both practical and ridiculous items:

Bear bells and air horns
Human voice and sound
Bear spray
Guns
Prayer

You’ll have to make your own judgment about which items are more effective than others. I do hope that this short article motivates you to do more research on the topic. Keep in mind that my opinions here are based primarily on personal experience, anecdotal evidence, and bias, secondarily on outside research, and with a bit of hunch thrown in for good measure.
