Abstract

I’ve sprayed grizzly bears on three occasions in the Yellowstone region, my home trekking locale. One was particularly memorable, while on a six day backpacking trek that transected Yellowstone National Park’s northern boundary.

I had stopped for breakfast on Slough Creek, near the boundary between Yellowstone National Park and the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, in an area that is known to fishermen as the “Third Meadow.” After hiking about three hours before sunrise, I had jumped off the trail a few hundred yards to make coffee on a gravel bar. The air was dead calm, the water crystal clear, the morning temperature crisp. Everything around me basked in the golden glow of the sunrise.

Out of this serenity, I spotted a subadult male grizzly walking the Slough Creek Trail.
