Abstract

The beauty of lightweight backpacking lies in its simplicity. By cutting out the fat from my standard overnight kit, I am left with a more manageable selection of gear that would fit into a grocery sack. Every item must serve an essential purpose that is not met by something else already in my pack.  I admit that the paring down process can be agonizing.  But the reward is greatly felt on the trail and is not only measured in ounces. Both shoulders and mind are left unencumbered.

This principle also applies to photography.  Much of my work as a professional is heavy on both equipment and logistics.  Having the right tools and skills for the job is what I owe the client.  But just as often, more is not necessarily better.  Do we always need more lenses, more lights, more megapixels?  Early photojournalists of the last century knew the value of going light, allowing both body and mind to stay nimble as events unfolded.  The prevailing motto ‘keep it simple, stupid’ resulted in an entire era of amazing imagery.
