Abstract

Almost every lightweight backpacker will struggle with the issue of food containment (the process of protecting food from wild animals) at some point in their travels. And, more and more areas require us to use specific, approved containers. We want to travel as light as possible, but the approved containers are heavier and bulkier than most of us would consider ideal — especially those of us pursuing the ultralight ethic.

While I’ve seen endless discussions online about circumventing regulations to avoid carrying these containers (where the hiker is often motivated by the desire to reduce pack weight), the truth is that we owe it to ourselves, our wildlife, and the preservation of a wilderness experience to play the game by the rules. Bears that get food rewards through our carelessness usually become repeat offenders and often have to be relocated or killed. Also, for the less altruistically motivated, National Park Service wildlife biologist Rachel Mazure notes that most bear-related injuries in our national parks happen when people are trying to get food away from bears, not when bears are trying to get food away from people.
