Abstract

While the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets minimum guidelines for registered bear deterrents, two key factors they do not regulate are spray distance and time to release. No pepper spray optimizes one of these at the expense of another, unfortunately.

The Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) is generally considered the authority on making scientifically-sound recommendations about the qualities that define an effective pepper spray.
