Abstract

In August, the Outdoor Industry Association reported that, according to recent research, participation in backpacking in the US has declined by more than 23% during the last seven years. For those of us who of us who continue to frequent the nation’s backcountry areas, this information represents both an opportunity and a challenge.

The good news is that a decline in backpacking may signal the possibility of some relief for our beleaguered backcountry areas, many of which have been hammered by sustained overuse.The bad news, in addition to the possibility of a shrinking constituency for wilderness, is that each of us may be getting out into the places we love less frequently than we would like.
