Abstract

There are only a few men who know the way to Sangay Volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes. And only a handful of others that are paid to protect the unique national park in which it is located. The closest village is home to an association of guides who are working hard to lead adventurers to this mountain and to protect the park for future visitors. They started this association five years ago and have had increasing success. As the recipients of the 2004 GoLite and Backpacking Light grant, the guides of Guarguallá are leading expeditions up this steaming giant more successfully and with greater safety.
