PDF reprint of an article on backpacking Alaska from Backpacking Light Magazine (Print Version).
The wilderness areas of Northern Alaska provide a backdrop for backcountry challenges that are normally unappreciated by, say, the typical national-park vacation hiker. The ideas described in this article were developed over long summers spent bushwhacking solo across Northern Canada and Alaska, including two Yukon and two Alaskan crossings—the Yellowstone-to- Yukon walk and a Dempster-to-Dalton route. I am fortunate to count some very competent outdoorsmen among my friends, including Keith and Susan Echelmeyer, Arno and Cindy Berkowitz, Lars Monsen, and Ryan Jordan. The counsel of these individuals was invaluable in both my gear selection and mental outlook. Their knowledge, paired with my family’s love, carries much of the burden for me when I walk. There is no way I would ever have made it on my own.
