Weighed On Our Scales » Hmm, the weight of a weight device...
The Alpine scale is designed to weigh backpacks and other outdoor sports equipment while hanging. With a maximum capacity of 55 pounds (25 kilograms), this scale weighs in 0.02 pound or 10 gram increments. The patented design enables the scale to be clamped to a stand, hung from a ceiling hook, or held by hand.
When you carry your home on your back, you want to know that you're not carrying more than you need. Weighing your gear, food, and fuel before and after a hike will give you an accurate picture of what you carried, used, and brought home.
Knowing accurate weights of your gear will allow you to judge pieces of existing gear against new items you're considering or two pieces you own against one another. Keeping tabs on the weight of gear you've modified to lighten it can show amazing results as well.
Knowing the weight of gear doesn't necessarily have any real-world use other than bragging rights on the BPL forums, but weighing food and fuel before a trip so that you're only carrying the safe minimums is a positive practice that will allow you to hone your needs precisely. Weighing your consumables before you leave on a hike and then weighing the garbage and leftovers afterward will play a big role in learning and refining your on-trail needs. This scientific approach is precise, accurate, and takes the guesswork out of food and fuel requirements.
The Alpine Digital Scale needs at least 50 grams of weight to start the sensor and then after that it will increase in 10g increments. So in order to accurately weigh lighter weight items it is recommended to hang something weighing more than 50 grams on the scale and then adding the lighter weight items and calculating the weight using subtraction. For instance if you'd like to weigh something light such as a water bottle put you backpack on the scale, remember its weight, then put the water bottle into the pack and remember that weight. Subtract the weight of the pack from the weight of the pack and bottle to get the weight of the bottle.
