Overview

In 2006 MontBell upgraded its lineup of lightweight down jackets, adding new products and upgrading to 800 fill down. For Fall 2007 MontBell will add hooded versions of its two lightest down jackets - the UL Down Inner jacket and the Alpine Light Down jacket.

The photos to the right show the Alpine Light Down Parka in women's and men's versions, and the UL Down Inner Parka in two colors.

The hooded version of the UL Down Inner jacket is the UL Down Inner Parka. Even with its hood, the new UL Down Inner Parka weighs only 8 ounces and has 2.1 ounces of down fill. The features include 800 fill down, 15 denier ballistic airlight shell, sewn-through construction, hand warmer pockets, DWR finish and an included stuff sack. Both men's and women's styles will be available. The men's style features a grid quilt pattern, while the women's has a diamond quilt pattern. The women's version weighs 7.6 ounces and has 1.76 ounces of down fill. When compared to the non-hooded versions, these jackets add just over one ounce to the non-hooded jacket weights (1.1 ounces for the men's and 1.3 ounces for the women's). For so little weight gain, the new UL Down Inner Parka has more versatility for use in a sleep system and is a welcome addition to MontBell's down jackets. Prices are $!55 for the down inner parka and $140 for the jacket.

The new Alpine Light Down Parka is the hooded version of the recently introduced Alpine Light Down jacket. The hooded parka weighs 13.5 ounces (4.2 ounces of fill) in the men's version and 11.5 ounces (3.2 ounces of fill) in the women's version. Both the men's and women's jackets are about 2 ounces heavier than their non-hooded counterparts. The Alpine Light Down Parka has 800 fill down, 30 denier ballistic rip-stop nylon shell, 30 denier ballistic nylon taffeta lining, sewn-through construction, DWR finish, micro-fleece lined collar, elastic cuffs, internal drop pockets, reverso front zipper, fleece-line zippered hand pockets, 2 way adjustable hood and included stuff sack. The Alpine Light Down Parka looks to be a very warm jacket at 13.5 ounces. Prices are $165 for the parka and $150 for the jacket.

Wow, this is exactly what I've been looking for, why don't more companies make U.L. down hooded jackets?

Sweet. Those look great. Any word on when/if the short-sleeve down sweater will arrive in the States?

The Boulder store has the down t-shirts if that's what you mean? I don't know if they're on their website.

Bummer the down tee shirt only comes with a snap front instead of a zipper.

Yes, I'm talking about this Montbell down t-shirt. Thanks, Christopher. I didn't see it on the American website, and didn't know that they were at the store there in Boulder. I might have to give them a call.

The hooded Alpine Light Down Parka which weighs 13.5 ounces and has 4.2 ounces of down fill appears to be somewhat heavy. As a few examples the Feathered Friends Hyperion jacket weighs 11 oz with 5.15 oz of down made in Flite fabric and the Feathered Friends Hooded Helios Jacket weighs 16 oz with 9 oz of down in Epic frabric. My large Feathered Friends Hyperion Jacket with 5.15 oz of 800+ down made with eVENT fabric weighs 16.4 oz (which includes the additional snaps and cover for the snaps) and my Feathered Friends Volant Hood with 1 oz of 800+ down in eVENT fabric weighs 3.2 oz which came in under the estimate FF estimate of 4oz in Epic fabric.
